Although there’s no denying the cool factor of tinted windows, is window tinting illegal? Window tinting laws vary by state, so it may or may not be legal depending on where you live. That’s why it’s essential to check the law before getting your vehicle’s windows tinted. The last thing you want to do is invest in window tinting darker than the legal limit without knowing it. For Maryland residents, the window tinting laws vary depending on the type of vehicle.

Maryland Window Tinting Laws

According to the Automotive Safety Enforcement Division in Maryland, all windows with aftermarket tint on passenger cars, convertibles, and station wagons must have at least 35% light transmittance. So as long as the tint lets in at least 35% of visible light, window tinting is legal in Maryland. Anything darker than that could result in a citation.

Larger multipurpose vehicles such as limos, vans, and class “E” trucks with a GVWR of less than 10,000 pounds have slightly different regulations. Driver and right-front passenger doors with aftermarket tint must have at least 35% visible light transmittance. However, all other windows can be tinted to any degree of color or darkness.

The law prohibits aftermarket tint on any windshield below the AS1 line or five inches from the top of the windshield. It also prohibits red, yellow, amber, and reflective window tint.

Medical Exemptions for Window Tinting

Although there are laws for window tinting, there are medical exemptions. You’ll need your physician to fill out a Medical Exemption Form to get an exception. Windows can be tinted darker than the 35% allowed legally with the appropriate recommendation.
