When it comes to auto tint laws, Maryland and Virginia have different regulations. For those looking to darken their vehicle windows, understanding the differences between these two states is essential for avoiding legal consequences. In this article, we’ll compare the window tint regulations of Maryland and Virginia in greater detail, including how dark window tints are allowed to be, the types of films that can be used, and any other restrictions on vehicle window tinting. Additionally, we’ll discuss the legal consequences of violating these laws in each state.

Overview of Auto Tint Laws in Maryland and Virginia

Maryland Tint Laws

For cars, station wagons, and convertibles, all windows must allow at least 35% light transmittance (VLT). On the other hand, for vans, class E Trucks, and multipurpose vehicles, windows on the front two doors must have at least 35% light transmittance, while all other windows can be tinted to any degree. In addition, Maryland permits windshields to be tinted or shaded only along its top 5 inches. It’s prohibited below 5 inches from the top of the windshield or the AS1 line.

Virginia Tint Laws

In Virginia, the front side windows of sedans must allow at least 50% light transmittance, while back side windows and rear windows must have at least 35% VLT. As for SUVs and vans, front windows must allow more than 50% of light in, but any darkness can be used on rear and back side windows. In addition, non-reflective window tint is allowed on windshields of sedans, vans, and SUVs so long as it’s above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line

Types of Films Allowed for Vehicle Window Tinting

In Maryland and Virginia, red, yellow, and amber are prohibited. However, the two states differ in their law regarding reflective film. Any tint with a reflective or sparkling effect is not permitted in Maryland. On the other hand, in Virginia, certain levels of reflection are allowed. However, the reflection can not be over 20% for all vehicles for both front and back windows.

Additional Restrictions on Vehicle Window Tinting

Aside from restrictions related to how dark a tint can be or what type of film will be used, both states also impose some additional rules when it comes to vehicle window tinting layers (or “films”) applied at once.
